Autocracy is a system of government in which one person holds most or all political power. It is usually used in politics and history to describe rule with little public control or opposition.

autocracyはギリシャ語auto-「自己」+ -cracy「支配・権力」に由来します。原義は「自分一人の力による統治」で、権力が分かち合われない感じがそのまま独裁主義につながります。autocratやdemocracyも同じ語根を含みます。
Autocracy comes from Greek auto- "self" and -cracy "rule" or "power." Its original sense was rule by one person acting by their own authority. From that idea, it developed into the modern sense of government where power is not shared; autocrat and democracy contain the same root of rule.
