権力や権威が政府や指導者に極端に集中し、個人の自由や基本的な権利が制限される政治体制。民主的な手続きを軽視して反対意見や批判を抑圧する傾向が強い。
Authoritarianism is a political system or style of rule in which a leader or government demands strong obedience and limits freedom. Power is usually kept by a small group, and people have little influence over important decisions. The word is often used in discussions of politics, rights, and government control.

authoritarianism は authority + -arian + -ism で、authority はラテン語 auctoritas にさかのぼります。author や augment と同じ語根で、「力を与え増大させる」感覚から、権威への服従を重んじる思想名になりました。
