Authoritarian describes a person, system, or style that demands strict obedience and gives little freedom to others. It is often used for governments, leaders, or parenting methods that control people too strongly. The word usually has a negative meaning.

authoritarian は authority「権威」+ 接尾辞 -ian「〜に関する」から成る語です。authority は古フランス語を経てラテン語 auctoritas にさかのぼり、同根の author や authorize を思うと、「権威を根拠に人を従わせる」という意味合いが見えます。
Authoritarian is built from authority and the ending -ian, meaning "connected with." Authority comes through Old French from Latin auctoritas, from the same family as author and authorize. The root idea is power based on recognized control or influence, and authoritarian later came to describe a strong emphasis on obedience to such authority.
