解説 Definition
クォークとは陽子や中性子などのハドロンを構成する基本的な素粒子で、現代の素粒子物理学で重要な役割を果たしています。色荷と呼ばれる性質を持ち、グルーオンを介して強い相互作用を行います。クォークは単独では観測できず、常に他のクォークと束縛された状態で存在します。
A quark is a very small particle that forms parts of atoms, especially protons and neutrons. It is a scientific term used in physics to describe one of the basic building blocks of matter. This is a technical word and is not used much in everyday conversation.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
quark は単体で日常語と結びつきにくいので、まず proton や neutron の“中身”として固定すると覚えやすいです。原子を習ったあとに、そのさらに内側へ進んだときに出てくる基本粒子が quark。up / down など6種類があり、特に陽子・中性子は quark からできる、という図で覚えると定着します。electron のように単独で飛び回る粒ではなく、普通は単独で現れず gluon によって強く縛られる点もセットで。quark model, quark-gluon plasma も頻出です。
Do not try to remember `quark` alone. Fix it in your mind as the tiny thing inside protons and neutrons. If atoms have layers, quarks are even deeper inside.

quark の語源・成り立ち Etymology
quark は 1964年に物理学者ゲルマンがジョイス作品から採った語で、もとはドイツ語 Quark「凝乳・たわごと」系とされる。東欧語の乳製品名 twarog なども同根と考えられ、「正体不明の粒」に遊び心ある名を与えた感じが見えて面白い。
"Quark" was chosen in 1964 by physicist Murray Gell-Mann, who took it from James Joyce's writing. The word is also linked with German Quark, meaning a kind of curd cheese, and sometimes also "nonsense." Because it sounded unusual and playful, it was used for a newly proposed tiny particle whose nature was still unclear.
