quark は 1964年に物理学者ゲルマンがジョイス作品から採った語で、もとはドイツ語 Quark「凝乳・たわごと」系とされる。東欧語の乳製品名 twarog なども同根と考えられ、「正体不明の粒」に遊び心ある名を与えた感じが見えて面白い。
"Quark" was chosen in 1964 by physicist Murray Gell-Mann, who took it from James Joyce's writing. The word is also linked with German Quark, meaning a kind of curd cheese, and sometimes also "nonsense." Because it sounded unusual and playful, it was used for a newly proposed tiny particle whose nature was still unclear.
