ラテン語 distillare は dis-「離して」+ stillare「しずくが落ちる」から成り、液体を一滴ずつ落として分ける像がそのままです。still や instill も同根で、「ぽたぽた落ちる」動きが蒸留にも染み込ませる意味にも通じます。
Distillation comes from Latin `distillare`, meaning "to drip down in drops." It is built from `dis-` and `stillare`, "to drip." The image of liquid falling drop by drop led naturally to the idea of separating and purifying a liquid by heating and cooling it; `instill` and `still` are related words.
