distillingはラテン語distillare「しずくとなって落ちる」にさかのぼり、dis-「離れて」+ stillare「滴る」から成ります。原義は「ぽたぽた落ちる」なので、蒸留が液体を分けて一滴ずつ取り出す操作だと見えてきます。stillやinstillも同じ語根です。
Distilling comes from Latin distillare, meaning "to drip down," from dis- and stillare, "to drip." The earliest image is liquid falling in drops. That sense later became the technical idea of separating a liquid by heating it and collecting it drop by drop.
