To distill means to separate and purify a liquid by heating it and then cooling the vapor back into liquid form. It is commonly used in making alcohol, chemicals, and some medicines. The word can also mean reducing information to its most important ideas.

distill はまず distilled water（蒸留水）や distilled spirits（蒸留酒）で覚えると定着しやすい語です。液体をいったん熱で分け、冷やして純粋な部分を取り出す動作が核で、そこから「長い説明や複雑な議論を要点だけに絞る」にも広がります。単なる refine より、不要物を落として本質だけを抽出する感じが強め。dissolve（溶かす）と混同しやすいですが、distill は“分離して純化する”方向です。名詞 distillation もセットで覚えると連想が続きます。

The core image is separating and keeping only the pure part, so the word later extends to writing or speaking that is reduced to the essential points. Do not mix it up with `dissolve`: `distill` is about separating and purifying, not melting into liquid.

Distill came into English through Old French from Latin distillare, meaning "to drip down." It is built from de-/dis- "down" and stillare "to drip," from stilla "drop."
