Definition

A distillate is a liquid made by heating something and then cooling the vapor back into liquid form. The word is often used for alcohol, oils, fuels, and chemicals produced by distillation.

Memory Tip

Build it from `distill`. If `distill` is the process and `distilled` describes something after that process, then `distillate` is the thing produced by it. This pattern helps: `distill` -> action, `distillate` -> result.

Etymology

Distillate comes from Latin distillare, made from dis- and stillare "to drip." The original image is of liquid falling in drops. From that action, the word came to refer to liquid collected by distillation. Related English words include distillation and instill.
