dilute は「液体を薄くする」が核で、まず dilute with water / dilute the juice のような定番の形で覚えると残りやすいです。濃いものの強さを下げるので、反対語の concentrate（濃縮する）とセットにすると整理しやすい。さらに比喩で「効果・主張・意味を弱める」にも広がり、a diluted message のように使えます。pollute とつづりが少し似ますが、pollute は「汚染する」なので混同しないこと。
