filtration は filter に名詞化の接尾辞 -ation が付いた語で、filter は古フランス語 filtre、さらに中世ラテン語 filtrum にさかのぼります。もとは「フェルトでこす」という発想で、液体を通して不純物を除くことを表します。関連語は filter, filtrate。
