まず be smitten with A をひとかたまりで覚えると使いやすいです。with の後ろに人や物を置いて、『Aにすっかり心を奪われている』という形。like よりかなり強く、interested より感情的で、admire よりも熱がある一方、obsessed ほど重くはないことが多いです。恋愛だけでなく a singer, a puppy, a city などにも使えます。『見た瞬間から気持ちが持っていかれて、少し理性が弱くなる表情』を場面ごと覚えると残りやすいです。

古英語 smitan（打つ・強く当てる）の過去分詞形で、語幹 smit- に過去分詞語尾 -en が付いた語です。『恋に落ちた』の意味は『心を一撃で打たれた』という比喩から生まれ、smite や古風な smote にも同じ“打つ”感覚が残ります。
