古フランス語 faisan、さらにラテン語 phasianus を経て、ギリシャ語で「パシス川の鳥」を表した語に由来します。つまり地名がそのまま鳥名になった語で、学名 Phasianus や科名 Phasianidae に同じ根が残っています。
Pheasant came through Old French and Latin from Greek phasianos, meaning a bird connected with the River Phasis. So the bird’s name originally came from a place name. The root still appears in scientific names such as Phasianus and Phasianidae.
