解説 Definition
地面近くにすむ小型の野鳥で、特にヤマウズラのようなずんぐりした狩猟鳥をさします。走って移動することを好み、羽は褐色のまだら模様でまわりの草地に溶け込むため保護色になっています。ヨーロッパでは伝統的に肉が食用とされてきましたが、野生の狩猟鳥として知られる鳥類です。

partridge の語源・成り立ち Etymology
partridge は古フランス語を経てラテン語 perdix、さらにギリシャ語 perdix にさかのぼる語で、接辞分解より鳥名そのものの借用です。学名 Perdix や形容詞 perdicine も同根で、鳴き声をまねた古い名がそのまま残ったと考えると覚えやすいです。
Partridge came into English through Old French, from Latin `perdix`, which itself came from Greek `perdix`. It was borrowed as the name of the bird, rather than built from smaller parts in English. The word is thought to be very old and may have started as an imitation of the bird’s call; the scientific name `Perdix` is from the same root.
