Lawfully means in a way that follows the law. It is used in legal, official, and formal contexts to show that an action is allowed by the rules of a country or system. It is more formal than simply saying legally.

lawfully は law + -ful + -ly で、law は古英語 lagu、さらに古ノルド語 lag「置かれたもの・定め」にさかのぼります。lawful や lawless を見ると、共同体が「置いた決まり」に沿うことが核だと分かり、そこから「合法的に」という意味が自然に出ます。
