古英語 beorht（輝く、光る）からゲルマン祖語 *berhtaz に遡る。印欧祖語 *bhereg-（白く輝く）が語源で、同根語に birch（白樺＝白く輝く木）がある。「光を放つ→明るい→聡明な」と意味が広がった。
