共演者
解説 Definition
映画やドラマで主役級の俳優と一緒に出演する共演者のこと。
A costar is a person who appears together with another actor in a film, show, or play. The word is used for performers who share important roles in the same production. It can also be written as "co-star."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
co- は coworker, coauthor, cooperate のように「一緒に・共同で」。star はそのまま「スター」。つまり costar は「スターと一緒に出る人」と分解すると覚えやすいです。主演を食うほど目立つ脇役というより、映画やドラマで主役級の俳優と並んで出演する相手を指す語。文脈では star in と一緒に出やすく、a movie costar / her costar の形で見たら「共演者」。coaster と見間違えないよう注意。
Break it into `co-` plus `star`. `Co-` means together, so a `costar` is a star who appears together with another star. Be careful not to confuse it with `coaster`.

costar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語由来の接頭辞 co-「共に」と、古英語 steorra 由来の star「星・主役」から成る語です。coauthor や cooperate と同じ co- を持ち、主役の星の横で共に輝く人という感覚から「共演者」になりました。
Costar is built from the prefix co-, from Latin, meaning "together," and star, from Old English steorra. Star had already developed the sense of a leading performer, as if that person were the "star" of a show. Costar therefore came to mean someone who appears together with another star. The same co- appears in words like coauthor and cooperate.
