trending は trend に -ing が付いた形で、trend は古英語系の「向きを変える・曲がる」にさかのぼります。物事の流れがある方向へ傾いていくイメージから「話題がその向きへ集まる」という感覚が生まれ、trend や trendy が同根です。
Trending is formed from trend plus the ending -ing. Trend goes back to an old Germanic idea meaning "to turn" or "to bend," which later became the idea of moving in a certain direction.
