front は古フランス語 front、さらにラテン語 frons/frontis「額・前面」へさかのぼります。顔のいちばん前にある「額」から「前部」全体を指すようになった語です。confront や frontier に同じ根が見えます。
Front comes through Old French front from Latin frons or frontis, meaning "forehead" or "front surface." The meaning extended from the forehead to the forward part of something more generally.
