region はラテン語 regere「まっすぐ導く・支配する」から出た regio が語源。もとは「境界線で区切られ、治められる範囲」で、今の「地域」につながる。regulate や regime と同じ reg- を持つ。
Region comes from Latin regio, linked to regere, meaning "to rule" or "to direct in a straight line." It first referred to an area marked out or governed under rule.
