A hectare is a metric unit of area equal to 10,000 square metres, or 100 ares. It is commonly used to state the size of farms, fields, forests, parks, and other relatively large areas of land.

ギリシャ語の「百」を意味する接頭辞hecto-と、ラテン語「広場」由来の単位areが結合しました。文字通り「100アール」を指すため、1万平方メートルという大きさが直感的に納得できます。同じ接頭辞を持つhectoliter（ヘクトリットル）が関連語です。
