ギリシャ語 parenthesis（παρένθεσις）から。para-（傍らに）+ en-（中に）+ thesis（置くこと）で「間に挿入するもの」が原義。関連語：thesis（論文）、synthesis（合成）。文中に補足を「挟み込む」記号だから括弧と呼ばれる。
