A parenthesis is one of the curved marks used in writing: ( ). It can also mean words added into a sentence as extra information. The plural form is usually "parentheses."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
見た目は長いですが、覚える軸は「文の本筋に補足を差し込む記号」です。読むときは extra information を入れる合図だと結びつけると定着しやすいです。頻出は in parentheses, put A in parentheses。なお brackets は囲み記号の総称寄りで、parentheses は主に () を指します。さらに parenthesis が単数、parentheses が複数なので、実際には複数形のほうをよく見かける点も一緒に覚えると混乱しません。

ギリシャ語parenthesisにさかのぼり、para「脇に」+ en「中に」+ tithenai「置く」から成る。中世ラテン語・フランス語を経て英語に入り、字義どおり「脇へ差し入れるもの」なので、文中に補足を挟む括弧を表す。関連語はthesis、hypothesis。
Parenthesis goes back to Greek parenthesis, built from parts meaning "to put in at the side." It passed through Latin and French before entering English. The literal idea is of something inserted into a sentence, and this became the name for both the inserted remark and the marks around it.
