古英語 on sīdan（側面に）が短縮された形。sīdan は side（側面）の与格形。「本筋の横へ」という空間的イメージから、演劇の「傍白」(aside) の意味も生まれた。関連語: side, beside。
From Old English on sīdan, meaning "at the side." The second part is an old form of side, and the phrase was gradually shortened into one word. Its basic idea is moving or being to one side, which later also gave the theatrical sense of words spoken off to the side; compare side and beside.
