一定の地域や区域に関すること、または広がりや面積に関係することを表す形容詞。地理学、言語学、生態学などの分野で、ある現象や特徴がどの地域に分布するか、どれほどの範囲や面積に及ぶかを説明するときによく使われる。
Areal means relating to an area, region, or surface. It is often used in geography, science, and technical writing when talking about the distribution or size of something across space. It is more formal than simply saying "regional" or "surface-related."

area を知っていれば覚えやすい語。-al は「…に関する」という形容詞語尾なので、areal はそのまま「area に関する」=「地域の・面積の」。regional が行政区分や一般的な地域性を言いやすいのに対し、areal は分布範囲・面積・区域区分をやや専門的に述べるときに出やすい。地理・言語・生態で areal distribution の形で見ると定着しやすい。aerial（空中の）と綴りがかなり紛らわしいので、e が先に入るのは aerial とセットで注意。
