解説 Definition
「ago」は副詞で「（今から）〜前に」という意味を表し、過去の時点を現在から数えて表現する際に使われる。時間の長さを示す語の後に置いて使い、「two days ago（2日前）」のように使う。過去形の文で用いられる。
Ago is used to show how much time has passed before now. It comes after a time expression, such as a number of days, months, or years.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「ago」は単独で覚えるより、必ず時間表現の後ろにつく形で固めると定着します。まずは two days ago, a week ago, long ago をひとまとまりで覚えるとよいです。意味は「今を基準にさかのぼって〜前」。この“今から見て”が重要で、before のように別の時点を基準にする語とは違います。文でも I met her two days ago. のように過去形と強く結びつく、と押さえると使い分けで迷いません。

agoは古英語 agan「過ぎ去る・去っていく」に由来し、a-とgoの現代語の足し算ではありません。もとは「過ぎ去って」の感覚なので、three years agoは『三年が去って今に至る』という見方になる。goやbegoneにも移動の核が見える。
Ago comes from Old English agan, meaning "to pass away" or "go by." It is not made from the modern words a and go. The original sense was "gone by" or "passed," which is why three years ago means three years have passed until now.
