解説 Definition
「although」は接続詞として「けれども」「〜にもかかわらず」という意味を持つ。二つの対照的な事実や状況をつなぐ際に使われる逆接の接続詞である。文頭または文中に置いて、前後の節を対比させる表現に用いられる。
Although is used to show contrast between two ideas. It means that one fact is true, but another fact makes the situation different or surprising. It is common in both spoken and written English.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「though の少し改まった版」として覚えると定着しやすい語。基本感覚は though と同じ「〜だけれども」だが、although のほうが文頭で節を導く形が多く、書き言葉でも頻出。型は Although S V, ... 。先に事実を認め、そのあとで本題を言う「譲歩→主張」の順で読むと意味が取りやすい。however は文と文をつなぐが、although は節をつなぐ点も区別すると整理しやすい。すでに逆接なので although ... but ... と重ねない点にも注意。
Remember although as a more formal cousin of though. It often comes at the start: Although S + V, ... , where you admit one fact first and then give the main point. Also keep the pattern clean: although already shows contrast, so do not add but after it.
