howeverは古英語 hū「どう」+ æfre 由来の ever「いつでも」が結びついた語で、分解すると how + ever。whoever や whatever の ever も同じで、原義は「どのようにであれ」。そこから譲歩の響きが生まれ、「しかしながら」の意味でも使われるようになった。
`however` was formed from `how` and `ever`; `how` comes from Old English *hu*, and `ever` comes from an Old English form meaning "at any time." The original force was "in whatever way" or "no matter how," like in `whoever` and `whatever`. From that broad concessive sense, it also developed the linking use meaning something like "nevertheless" or "all the same."
