However is used after a previous idea to introduce a fact or opinion that contrasts with it. It often appears in writing or slightly formal speech when you want to change the direction of the discussion and mean something like "even so" or "that said." Unlike but, however is a conjunctive adverb, so it usually comes after a full stop or semicolon and is often followed by a comma.
