Nevertheless means in spite of that or even so. It is used to show that the second idea is true although something before it might suggest a different result. It is a formal linking word, often used in writing.

長い語ですが、読むたびに「前の内容を受ける→それでも結論は逆へ振る」という合図だと覚えると定着します。however よりやや硬く、文章語でよく見ます。Although S V, ... ; nevertheless, ... や There were problems. Nevertheless, we continued. のように「不利な事実→それでも続行」の流れとセットで記憶すると強いです。nonetheless はほぼ同義、therefore は因果なので混同しないように整理しましょう。
Break it into never + the + less: even after a problem, the result changes less than expected. Use it as a signal word for 'the bad fact is true, but the next sentence goes the other way.' It is close to nonetheless, but not to therefore.

never＋the＋less の3語が合体した複合語。古英語 næfre（決して～ない）+ þe less（それだけ少なく）で「それでも少なくならない→それにもかかわらず」。nonetheless も同構造の類義語。
Nevertheless was formed inside English from three older words: never + the + less. Its basic sense was "never the less," or "not less because of that," which developed into "in spite of that." Nonetheless was built in the same way and is a close parallel form.
