ラテン語「con-（共に）」＋「scire（知る）」から成る「conscius（自覚している）」が語源。自分の内面を「共に知っている」状態が原義。関連語：conscience（良心）、science（同じscire語根で「知識」）。
Conscious comes from Latin conscius, based on con- "together" and scire "to know." It originally suggested a state of "knowing with oneself," or being aware inwardly. The same root appears in conscience and science, which also relate to knowledge.
