与えられた仕事や責任をまじめに、計画的かつ丁寧に果たそうとする性質を指す。心理学ではビッグファイブの一つで、自己管理ができ、几帳面で、やるべきことを着実に進める傾向を表す。
Conscientiousness is the quality of being careful, responsible, and well organized. It is often used in psychology as a personality trait linked to self-discipline and reliability. A person with high conscientiousness usually pays attention to details and tries to do things properly.

長い語ですが、まず conscientious をひとかたまりで覚え、-ness は「性質」と見ます。conscious（意識している）や conscience（良心）を知っていると、「やるべきことを意識し、良心的に、手を抜かず進める人」という像が作れます。つまり単なる hardworking ではなく、organized、reliable、disciplined の要素まで含む感じ。心理学では high conscientiousness のように使われ、lazy や careless の反対側に置くと定着しやすいです。

conscientiousness は conscientious+-ness。conscientious はラテン語 conscientia にさかのぼり、con-「共に」+ sci「知る」です。science や conscience も同根で、「内で正しさを知ること」が誠実さにつながります。
conscientiousness comes from conscientious plus -ness. Conscientious goes back to Latin conscientia, from con- "with, together" and scire "to know"; the same root appears in conscience and science. The word developed from the idea of inwardly knowing what is right to the modern sense of careful moral seriousness.
