lose は古英語 losian「失う、滅びる」にさかのぼり、名詞 loss と同じゲルマン系の語根を持ちます。もとは『試合に負ける』より広く『手元から消える、だめになる』感覚で、lost や loss にも、なくしてしまった痛みがそのまま残っています。
Set comes from Old English settan, meaning "to put" or "place," and table came through Old French from Latin tabula, meaning "board" or "plank." The phrase originally referred very literally to putting dishes and tools onto the board or table before a meal. Table is related to tablet, which keeps the older sense of a flat board.
