解説 Definition
意識がなく、反応しない状態にある、またはそのような状態を表します。深い昏睡状態で、刺激に反応できない状態です。医学的には脳機能の重大な障害を示す状態です。
Comatose means being in a state of deep unconsciousness and not able to respond to people or surroundings. It is mainly used in medical contexts for someone in a coma or a coma-like condition. It can also be used figuratively for someone who seems extremely sleepy or inactive, but that use is less literal.

comatose はギリシャ語 koma「深い眠り・昏睡」がラテン語経由で英語に入った coma に、形容詞化の -tose が付いた語です。つまり「coma の状態にある」が原義で、昏睡状態そのものを表します。関連語は coma、acoma ではなく comic ではなく、coma-related の coma。
Comatose was formed from coma with the adjective ending -tose. Coma came into English through Latin from Greek koma, meaning "deep sleep" or "trance." So comatose first meant "being in a coma-like state," and it has kept that basic sense.
