警報、警告、通知
noun 名詞危険、問題、緊急事態などを知らせ、注意や対応を促す警報や通知を指します。security alertやissue an alertのように使い、警戒している状態ではなく、その状態にさせる知らせを表します。
「警戒した」という意味で、危険や問題が起こりうる状況に対して注意を払い、素早く対応できる状態にあることを表します。常に周囲の変化に敏感で、即座に行動できる準備が整っている様子を指します。安全や防衛の文脈でよく使われる形容詞です。
Alert means watchful, careful, and ready to notice danger or important changes. It is commonly used for people, animals, or groups that are paying close attention. The word can also suggest being mentally quick and prepared to act.
まず動詞・名詞の alert「警報」を知っていると、形容詞 alert は「警報が鳴るような状況にすぐ反応できるくらい注意している」とつながります。aware が単に「気づいている」、careful が「慎重」、watchful が「見張っている」なら、alert は危険や変化に即反応できる緊張感つき。be alert to danger / stay alert / alert staff などの形でまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。
Remember common pairs like "stay alert" and "remain alert." It is stronger than just "aware" because it suggests you are ready to react at once. Think of drivers, guards, or soldiers watching for danger.
The security guard remained alert throughout the night shift.
警備員は夜勤の間ずっと警戒を怠りませんでした。
Drivers should stay alert when driving in foggy conditions.
霧の中を運転するとき、ドライバーは十分に注意する必要があります。
The soldiers were alert and ready to respond to any threat.
兵士たちは警戒態勢を取り、どんな脅威にも対応できるよう備えていました。

人に危険や問題を知らせて注意を向けさせることを表します。alert someone to somethingやalert someone that ...の形が典型で、単に情報を伝えるより、警戒や対応を促す含みがあります。
alert はフランス語 alerte を通じ、イタリア語 all'erta「高い所で見張りにつけ」にさかのぼります。さらにラテン語 erigere「立てる」が背景にあり、「高みに立って警戒する」感覚から今の意味になりました。関連語は erect, direct。
"Alert" came into English from French alerte, from Italian all'erta, meaning roughly "on the watch" or "on high ground." It is linked to the idea of standing up or keeping watch, connected in the background to Latin erigere, "to raise." The meaning shifted from being in a guarded position to being quick and watchful. Related English words include erect and direct.
