打楽器（パーカッション）とは、叩いたり、振ったり、こすったりすることで音を出す楽器の総称です。ドラム、シンバル、マリンバ、タンバリンなどが代表的な打楽器に含まれます。オーケストラやバンドにおいてリズムを担当する重要なパートです。

percussion はラテン語 percussio「打つこと」がフランス語を経て入った語で、もとには per-「強く」+ cutere「打つ」があります。「たたいて音を出す」という原義がそのまま打楽器の意味につながっており、repercussion や percussionist も同じ語根です。
Percussion comes from Latin percussio, meaning striking, which reached English through French. It is based on per- and cutere, meaning to strike or beat. The meaning stayed close to that original sense, and it came to refer especially to making sound by striking, as in percussion instruments.
