discourse はラテン語 discurrere「方々へ走る」にさかのぼり、dis-「あちこちに」+ currere「走る」でできています。course や current が同根で、話題が行き来し流れる感じが核。そこから「談話」は、考えを走らせ交わす言葉だと見えてきます。
