まず sermon は教会で牧師がする religious speech と結びつけると定着しやすいです。speech や talk よりも、聞き手を導いたり戒めたりする重い響きがあり、deliver/preach a sermon の形でよく出ます。sermonize は「お説教する」。scold がその場で叱る動作なのに対し、sermon は道徳や信仰を語って諭す感じ。比喩的に Don’t give me a sermon. なら「説教くさい話はやめて」で、lecture とも少し違う語だと押さえると残ります。
