grail（聖杯）とは、もともとキリスト教の伝説においてイエス・キリストが最後の晩餐で使ったとされる杯を指す名詞です。中世のアーサー王伝説では、騎士たちが探し求める究極の目標として描かれています。現代では比喩的に、非常に望ましいが達成困難な究極の目標や理想を指すためにも使われます。

grail は古フランス語 graal/greal「鉢・杯」を経て英語に入り、中世ラテン語 gradalis にさかのぼる語です。もともと『平たい大皿・器』の語感だったため、物語の中で特別な杯を指すのが自然に感じられます。遠い関連語候補に crater があります。
Grail entered English from Old French graal or greal, meaning a dish or cup, and it goes back to Medieval Latin gradalis. It seems to have first referred to a wide, shallow serving vessel rather than a magical object. In medieval stories, that ordinary vessel became the name of a special sacred cup.
