Collector came through Anglo-French and Late Latin from collector. Its root is Latin colligere, from com- meaning "together" and legere meaning "to gather" or "pick." So the word originally meant someone who brings scattered things together, and it later developed both the sense of a person who collects objects and one who collects money such as taxes; collect and collection are related words.
