Avarice means an extremely strong desire to have more money or possessions. It is usually used to criticize selfish greed. The word is more formal and literary than the common word greed.

avarice はラテン語 avaritia「貪欲」から古フランス語を経て英語へ入った。語幹 avar- は「むさぼる」、-ice は性質を表す名詞語尾で、avaricious も同根。欲しがるだけでなく、手放したくない心の癖だと分かると、強欲の像が立体的になる。
Avarice came into English through Old French from Latin avaritia, meaning "greed." The root avar- carries the idea of being eager to possess or grasp, and the ending formed an abstract noun for that quality. Over time it came to suggest not only wanting more, but also being unwilling to let go. A related word is avaricious.
