Abstention is the act of choosing not to vote, not take part, or not do something. It is especially common in political or formal situations, such as when someone does not vote in an election or meeting. It suggests a deliberate decision to stay out of an action.

abstention は abstain に名詞語尾 -tion が付いた形で、源はラテン語 abstinere「差し控える」です。abs-「離れて」+ tenere「保つ・つかむ」なので、「手を引いて関与しない」から棄権の意味になります。関連語は abstain, maintain。
Abstention comes from abstain plus the noun ending -tion. Abstain goes back to Latin abstinere, made from abs- "away" and tenere "to hold." The original sense was to hold oneself back, which later developed into the idea of not taking part, especially in voting.
