vote はラテン語 votum「誓願・誓い」から来て、語幹 vot- は「厳かに約束する」の意をもつ。vow や devote が同根で、投票が単なる選択ではなく「自分の意思を公に誓って示す」行為だと見えてくる。
Vote comes from Latin votum, meaning "vow" or "solemn promise." Over time, the idea moved from making a formal promise to formally expressing one's choice or will in public. It is related to vow and devote, which keep the older sense more clearly.
