camshaft の語源・成り立ち Etymology
camshaft はオランダ語 kam「櫛」由来の cam と、古英語 sceaft「棒・軸」の shaft から成る複合語です。comb も同系で、櫛の歯のような出っ張りを持つ部品が軸に付いて回るので、「カムの付いた軸」という意味がそのまま形を表します。
Camshaft is made from cam and shaft. Cam comes through Dutch kam, meaning "comb," because the part has projecting shapes like comb teeth, and shaft comes from Old English sceaft, meaning a rod or axle. The word therefore meant, quite literally, a shaft fitted with cams. Comb is from the same root as cam.
