alcoholic は alcohol + -ic から成る語で、alcohol はアラビア語 al-kuhl に由来します。もとは「細かい粉」や「精髄」を指し、酒の精分へ意味が移ったため、alcoholic はアルコールに関わる人・ものを表します。alcoholism も同じ語幹です。
