解説 Definition
十分な証拠がなくても、ある事柄をもっともらしい前提として考えることや、その推定内容を表す名詞。法律では「推定」の意味で使われる一方、日常語では出すぎた態度や厚かましさを指すこともある。
Presumption can mean a belief that something is true before there is full proof. In law and formal writing, it often refers to an accepted assumption unless it is disproved. It can also mean behavior that is too confident or rude because someone assumes too much.

presumption はラテン語 praesumptio に由来し、pre-「前もって」+ sumere「取る」が核です。証拠がそろう前に結論を先取りして“取ってしまう”感覚から、推定や思い込みの意味が育ちました。presume や assumption も同じ語根です。
Presumption comes from Latin praesumptio, from pre- "before" and sumere "to take." The original sense was of taking something in advance, before full proof or certainty. From that, it developed the ideas of assumption, expectation, or belief formed too early; presume and assumption share the same root pattern.
