A contralto is a woman with a very low singing voice, lower than most female voices. The word is mainly used in music, opera, and choir settings. It can also refer to a singer who has this voice type.

まず alto を基準語に置き、contralto は「alto よりさらに低く、深く鳴る女性の声」として位置で覚える。メゾソプラノ→アルト→コントラルトの順で音域が下がる並びをセットで固定すると強い。会話では単なる singer より opera singer, choir, rich lower voice などの場面と結びつけると残りやすい。alto と似て見えても、contralto は「女声の中で最も低い側」を指す専門的な呼び名で、ただのアルトより限定的だと意識すると混同しにくい。
Start from `alto`, the familiar voice name. Add `contra-` and think of a voice that goes lower and deeper than alto, at the low end of female voices. Remember the order as a ladder going down: mezzo-soprano, alto, contralto. It sticks well with opera, choir, and a rich lower voice.
