gourmand は古フランス語 gormant「食いしん坊な」から来た語で、さらに先の語源ははっきりしません。英語でも原義は「大食いする人」寄りで、そこから「食を大いに楽しむ人」へ広がったので、美食家にも食欲の濃さが残る語です。関連語は gourmandize、gourmandise。
