覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
glut を知っていると覚えやすい。glut は「過剰に満たす・詰め込む」で、glutton は「自分にどんどん詰め込む人」→ 食いしん坊。glutton for punishment / glutton for work のように、食べ物以外にも「〜を欲しがりすぎる人」に広がる。単なる hungry は一時的に空腹なだけだが、glutton は習慣的・性格的にむさぼる感じ。gluttony(大食・暴食)とセットで覚えると、名詞どうしのつながりでも定着しやすい。
Link it to `glut`, which has the idea of filling too much. A `glutton` is a person who keeps stuffing more in. Also remember `glutton for ...`, because the word is often used for someone who wants too much of something, not only food.

glutton の語源・成り立ち Etymology
glutton は古フランス語 gloton を経て、ラテン語 glutto「がつがつ食べる人」に由来します。さらに同系のラテン語 gluttire「ごくごくのみ込む」が背景にあり、関連語 glut や gluttony を見ると、「のみ込むように食べる人」から食いしん坊の意味になったと分かります。
Glutton came into English through Old French gloton, from Latin glutto, meaning "a greedy eater." It is related to Latin gluttire, "to swallow down," which also gave English glut and gluttony. The idea moved from simply swallowing greedily to the stronger sense of a person who eats too much.
