音楽における調の体系で、主音を中心とした音の組織的な関係性のこと。
Tonality is the organization of music around a central key or note. It helps create the sense that some notes and chords feel more stable or important than others. The word is mainly used in music theory and discussions of musical style.

tone を知っていれば入りやすい語。tone は個々の音や調子、tonal は「調に関する」、tonality はそこから一段広がって、曲全体がどの主音（tonic）を中心にまとまるかという“調のしくみ・調の感覚”を指す。major / minor や key を考える場面で出やすく、atonality（無調性）と対で覚えると区別しやすい。1音の高さではなく、終止で「ここに戻る」と感じる音の中心がある状態を思い浮かべると残る。

tonality は tone に -al と -ity が付いた語で、tone はラテン語 tonus、さらにギリシャ語 tonos「弦の張り・音の高さ」にさかのぼります。tone や tonic と同根で、音の張り方の関係全体が『どの調に聞こえるか』を決めるので、調性の意味へ自然につながります。
Tonality was formed from tone with the endings -al and -ity. Tone comes from Latin tonus and earlier Greek tonos, which meant a stretching of strings and then pitch or tone.
