解説 Definition
データや情報を特定の基準や規則にしたがって別の形式に変換したり、符号化したりする処理を指します。コンピュータでは文字列を各種の文字コードで表現したり、データの圧縮や暗号化を行ったりする場面でこの表現が使われます。言語学では、考えや情報を言語的な記号や表現に置き換える過程も含まれます。
Encoding is the process of changing information into a particular form or system so it can be stored, sent, or understood by a machine. It is often used in computing, data processing, and communication. In psychology, it can also mean how the brain first stores new information.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
encode を知っていれば、その動作・過程を表す名詞形が encoding。まず code を「決まった記号・規則」、encode を「その規則に合わせて変換する」と押さえると覚えやすいです。PCでは text encoding, character encoding の形で非常によく出て、文字化けの文脈と結びつけると定着します。decoding はその逆なので、セットで覚えると混同しにくくなります。

encoding は英語 encode + -ing で、en-「〜にする」+ code「記号体系」から成ります。code はラテン語 codex「木の板、写本、法典」にさかのぼり、codify や decode と並べると、「情報を規則ある記号へ写し替えること」だと見えてきます。
