形容詞として、態度や話し方が不自然に気取っている様子と、災害や病気、出来事などの影響を受けた状態の両方を表す。文脈によって「わざとらしい」という批判的な意味にも、「被害を受けた」「心を動かされた」という意味にもなる。
Affected can mean influenced or changed by something. It can also describe behavior or speech that seems unnatural because someone is trying to appear different, often more polite or important. The second meaning is usually negative.

Affected comes from Latin affectus, the past participle of afficere, meaning "to act on" or "influence." It is built from ad- "toward" and facere "to do or make," the same root seen in effect and affection. The idea was of something being acted upon, which later became "influenced" in English.
